Did You Know WE Can Make New York a Tobacco Free State?

Did You Know WE Can Make New York a Tobacco Free State?

I can remember growing up going with my Stepfather to the liquor store to buy his cigarettes, the truth is; sometimes he would even send me to buy them for him. The walls outside of the liquor stores and grocery stores for that matter, were covered in advertisements from cigarette companies. As a Mom of little ones, it is upsetting to drive through some neighborhoods and see the same horrible view, the walls plastered with tobacco advertisements. Why must our kids be subjected to this for a daily view, other than to entice them? There might be a solution, Did You Know WE Can Make New York a Tobacco Free State?

My stepfather smoked since he was 11 years old until the age of 83 when he passed away. If you ask my kids about their Tata, they will tell you their biggest memory was the oxygen tank he carried around and that he would make them mad because he still smoked. That’s a sad thing to remember for a child, and it is always something I mention to my kids when we talk about the dangers of using tobacco. My stepdad used to tell us, when asked why he began, that it was because it was always around; everyone was doing it. It was easy to buy them. Usually, my family and I have open communications about in-store marketing as it is not only my job but also how it affects them and its effectiveness with younger children. I want that to stop. We believe with less advertisement, less glorification of these products; I know that it can be done.

To me, the “Seen Enough Tobacco” campaign is very important because we NEED this change.

The average age of a New York smoker is 13! And it’s not an accident, tobacco companies spend billions of dollars to make this happen. As we know children are extremely susceptible to things and the tobacco companies like to take a advantage of that. But enough is enough, my Family and this generation of kids are sick of big tobacco, and being exposed to advertisement like these in their neighborhoods. Our kids are looking to make a change but they need our help.
